5 Hobbies You Need To Have In Your Thirties

5 hobbies might sounds like a lot, but you don’t have to do every hobby, everyday. And if you tell me you don’t have time for 5 hobbies, I bet you find time to watch Netflix and scroll Instagram everyday. Cutting down (not cutting out) on habits that don’t serve us to replace with a new hobby can benefit our mind, body and relationships.

Here are 5 hobbies you should start in your thirties.

1. A Hobby That Makes You Money

Both Cat and I are big fans of a passive income. Making money outside of an employer gives a sense of freedom and security. If you lost your job, you have another income to fall back on. If you can make an income from a hobby you enjoy, you’ve hit the jackpot. During lockdown I made candles and sold them on Etsy. Making the candles was the fun part and earning money from it was an added bonus.

2. A Hobby That Keeps You Active

We all know how important it is to be active for both your mind and body. But remember what works for you might be different for someone else. Try out a few different activities to find your favourite one. I personally don’t enjoy going to the gym, but I love being outside and exploring the world around me, so running (albeit at a slow pace) is perfect for me. If you can find a friend that wants to do the same you can hold each other accountable.

3. A Hobby To Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

You might think you don’t have 1 creative bone in your body, but we are all creative and it’s just like a muscle that needs to be worked in order to grow and get better. The best part is creativity comes in all different shapes and sizes, again it’s about finding what works for you. One of the reasons I love doing this blog is for the creative writing part. You could start dance classes, painting lessons, acting, songwriting, candle making, playing a musical instrument. The list goes on and on!

4. A Hobby That Benefits Others Or The Planet

Yes we need hobbies that benefit and develop ourselves, but we also need to give back to others or the planet. This would be hard to sustain everyday or even weekly so figure out a schedule of how to make it work for you and book the time in. It could be a monthly beach clean, fostering a dog or visiting a care home. Not only will someone/something else feel the benefits but you will feel good about it too! It’s a win-win.

5. A Hobby To Keep Your Brain Stimulated

This is really important in keeping our brain healthy. According to John Hopkins Medicine, regular ‘brain training’ or ‘life-learning’ may help with memory retention and potentially delay dementia. There’s other benefits to learning a new skill depending on your choice of brain stimulation. It could be anything from learning a new language to communicate with others, watching TedTalk videos to understand more about the world and hearing different perspectives, or learning to code so you can start your own website.

Creating new healthy habits needs to be sustainable in order to keep them up and develop them into hobbies. Setting time aside and having a schedule is key to making this work. If something is no longer serving you in a positive way then it’s time to ditch it and try something else.

So there you have it, 5 Hobbies that will benefit your mind, body, bank balance and the planet. Plus hobbies are also a great way to meet people as I talk about in my post, How To Easily Make Friends In Your 30s.

Please share your new hobbies in the comments and help others get inspired!
